Reenactment FAQ’s:
° Where and
when can I purchase tickets?
Tickets are available from gate attendants
at the entrance to the Park. Adult tickets are $10.00, and youth (6-17)
tickets are $5.00
each,
per day. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The Park gates open
to the public at 8:00 a.m., but the reenactor’s camps are not
open to the public until 10:00 a.m.
° Where is the best place for viewing the reenactment?
Narration of the reenactment over a PA system will
take place in front of the Field of Lost Shoes, just north of the Bushong Farm.
This is the
largest gathering area for spectators, although some spectators “follow” the
soldiers as they move from the southern section of the Park to the climax
of the Battle at the northern end.
° Are there food vendors?
Yes, many civic organizations offer a variety of light refreshments.
° Can I bring a picnic lunch?
Yes, and feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.
° What is a sutler?
In the 19th century sutlers traditionally followed the armies to sell items
not available to the soldiers that were not government issue, such as coffee,
yard goods, paper and writing instruments, sweet treats, tobacco, patent medicines,
reading materials, buttons, accoutrements, etc. This tradition continues today
at reenactments nationwide.
° What do we do if it rains?
In over 42 years of hosting the reenactment we have only cancelled the reenactment
a few times, and those cancellations took place after torrential downpours
that threatened the safety of the horses and riders. The reenactment is usually
held rain or shine. Tickets are non-refundable.
° Are there activities and events to attend before the reenactment?
Yes, your ticket includes admission to the Hall of Valor Civil War Museum.
In the Museum you can view the 47 minute award winning Field of Lost Shoes,
the exhibits on the Battle of New Market, and the Virginia Room, which gives
the story of the Civil War in chronological order with highlights on the Virginia
Campaign.
Also, there are living history presentations on the farm, a period church service
on Sunday, a signal corps and artillery demonstrations, and opportunities throughout
the weekend to walk through the camps and interact with reenactors. Camps close
to the public immediately following the reenactment.
° What is the difference between the tactical reenactment on Saturday and
the Battle reenactment on Sunday as listed in the schedule of events?
The tactical reenactment gives the opposing commanders
a chance to “war
game” a bit, including artillery fire, the use of cavalry units, infantry
using musket fire, and signal corps. On Sunday, the Battle reenactment is more
closely scripted to the original battle, ending in a Confederate victory.
° Is there a lot of walking involved?
A moderate amount of walking is required to get from the designated parking
areas to the sutlers row, concessions, the farm, camps, and the museum. Comfortable
shoes are recommended.
° Can I bring my pet?
No, pets are not permitted in the Park.
° Is there handicapped parking available?
Yes. Please let the gate and parking attendants know that you require handicapped
parking.
